GitHub Notifications and GitHub Copilot capabilities are being consolidated into a single GitHub app in Microsoft Teams. The new app combines repository updates and GitHub Copilot coding capabilities, so users can follow GitHub activity and act on it within Teams.
This change affects organizations that have enabled the GitHub apps in Microsoft Teams and users with GitHub Copilot capabilities.
Timeline
- The rollout of the consolidated GitHub app should be completed by mid-November 2026.
- The legacy GitHub app will be deprecated on 16 November 2026, and later retired.
How does this affect your organization?
Teams admins will find two GitHub apps with similar names in the Teams admin center.

- GitHub (deprecated) with the app ID 836ecc9e-6dca-4696-a2e9-15e252cd3f31
This was the previous GitHub app and will be deprecated first, then retired. Users should remove this app from their Teams conversations.
- GitHub with the app ID ca9e26b7-dce5-44a0-b2b7-a70a3d65ce25
Previously, this app was named GitHub Notifications. The app now combines repository notifications and GitHub Copilot coding capabilities in one app. Users with an eligible GitHub Copilot license get the GitHub Copilot capabilities in the same app. Users should add this app to their Teams conversations before 16 November 2026, as it replaces GitHub (deprecated).
- GitHub Notifications app
This app was renamed to GitHub (app ID ca9e26b7-dce5-44a0-b2b7-a70a3d65ce25) and is no longer available under its old name. Users of the GitHub Notifications app must manually update the app to the latest version. The app is not migrated automatically. Check the app update status in your Teams client.
Teams admins should verify the availability and installation state for the “new” GitHub app before 16 November 2026, as the legacy app will be retired later. Admins and users should also verify whether the new GitHub app delivers notifications to the intended Teams conversations for the repositories and event types they follow.
