Microsoft is now terminating the Office 365 E3 Developer subscriptions

As announced at the end of June, Microsoft is now terminating the existing Office 365 E3 Developer subscriptions, a few days later than scheduled.

Microsoft does not send an email notification about the termination. They simply disable the subscription with a remark the subscription will be deleted. At least I did not receive an email to my billing or Global Administrator account.

Organizations that still have an Office 365 E3 Developer subscription should check the current status. Mine was disabled in the past 24 hours and will be deleted in just a few days. This subscription does not follow the legacy subscription lifecycle, meaning licensed users have no grace period.

  • The termination only affects Office 365 E3 Developer subscriptions or SKUs, not any other subscriptions in your tenant.
  • If this is your only subscription in the tenant, you should read the information about unlicensed tenants.
RIP: Office 365 E3 Developer subscription

Microsoft recommends customers should transition to a standard Microsoft 365 or Office 365 Suite to preserve existing user data and workloads.

Mine was restored. I initally saw the same thing yesterday when I tried to get into my SharePoint area. It had all been disabled. So I just renabled it in the licensing and found out this morning, everything was restored.

Thanks for the update, Issie. I quickly checked mine, it’s still disabled with deletion scheduled for today. I will check it again tomorrow.

You are right. I can reactivate the subscription for free. It simply shows a billing amount of CHF 0. I wonder how long this will work.

Hello Tharaka, you need the Global Admin or Billing Admin role to reactivate it. But Microsoft may have implemented a new restriction for this license SKU if the option is still disabled.

If you have successfully reactivated your Office 365 E3 Developer licence, start moving all my data out to my paid tenant, as the licence could be revoked again at any time.

Hi All – My subscription deleted now and raise the Microsoft ticket and waiting for response. Anyone faced similar issue and is data can restored from OneDrive at least ? “Office 365 E3 Developer: This subscription is now disabled until ‎9/29/2026‎, when your data will be deleted. Learn about subscription statuses You’ll receive a final invoice for this subscription in about ‎22‎ days, and it will include a prorated refund if you’re eligible.”

Hello RSK, good luck with the case. I don’t think you will get support for a Developer subscription. In the past, Microsoft even told me (in some cases) that they don’t support my tenant because it includes this subscription, even when the issue was unrelated to it. You can buy a standard Microsoft 365 or Office 365 Suite to get your data back (within 30 days).
