Microsoft is preparing usage-based billing for Interpreter in Teams

Microsoft is preparing to move Interpreter in Teams to a usage-based billing service.
Currently, Microsoft mentions the following in the Interpreter requirements.

20 hours of interpretation is included per user per month with a Microsoft Copilot license. Access beyond the hours included is subject to available capacity.

Now, Microsoft has added Teams Interpreter as a new usage-based billing service.

I expect Microsoft to update the Interpreter licensing model soon.

  • Either give Copilot-licensed users a monthly capacity (like 20 hours as of today) with a usage-based billing meter for more (replacing the “subject to available capacity”).
  • Or reduce or remove the monthly capacity and switch Interpreter to usage-based billing only.

You may remember that Microsoft already communicated this in January, but cost management wasn't ready then; see my quote from January 2026.

1. We’re increasing the amount of included interpretation hours from 2 hours to 20 hours per user per month with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Access beyond the included hours is subject to available capacity.

2. To help teams adopt Interpreter seamlessly, we will provide IT admins with usage monitoring tools to help your teams plan and manage usage effectively. Usage monitoring tools will be available after March 31, 2026.

3. You will not be charged based on usage at this point in time. In the future, we may implement an option to purchase additional hours at which point we’ll provide clear and advanced notice. If we offer an option to purchase additional hours in the future, past usage will not be billed retroactively.
