Anchored comments for PDFs in OneDrive and SharePoint

Microsoft is adding anchored comments to the PDF viewer in OneDrive and SharePoint on the web. Users can attach a comment to a specific spot on a page or to selected text, and collaborate through replies and @mentions, in line with commenting in Office documents.

Timeline

The rollout should be completed by November 2026.

How does this affect your users?

Users see a short message that PDF documents stored in OneDrive or SharePoint now support comments.

Before this update, the PDF viewer did not offer comments tied to a location in the document.

With this update, users can anchor a comment to a location in the PDF. Select text and choose Add comment, or click a spot on a page to add a comment anchored to that location.

Users can then reply to comments, @mention colleagues, see visual anchor indicators, and navigate between a comment and its anchored content. Keyboard and screen reader support is included.

The anchored comment feature is on by default for eligible users.
Existing protections continue to apply, including sensitivity labels, Microsoft Purview DLP, and Information Rights Management (IRM) on rights-managed libraries.
