Copilot Credits Guide now covers Copilot in SharePoint and OneDrive

Microsoft updated the Copilot Credits Guide to include usage-based credits for Copilot in SharePoint and OneDrive, explaining which features are included in the Microsoft 365 Copilot license and which require usage-based credits.
Also notable, Microsoft publishes a third licensing guide for Copilot, alongside the general Power Platform and Copilot Studio guides and the Microsoft 365 Copilot documentation. When planning Copilot licensing, admins now need to check all of these regularly, in different places. 🎉🤔 Or subscribe to my blog for regular updates.

Copilot in SharePoint and OneDrive is gaining agentic capabilities, which means users can ask questions and run tasks in plain language instead of doing every step by hand.

  • In OneDrive and SharePoint, they can create and manage Office files, rules, and skills.
  • In SharePoint, they can also create and edit site pages, interactive reports, and libraries.

The prerequisite is always a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and a Microsoft 365 suite that includes SharePoint or OneDrive, plus optionally a setup for SharePoint/OneDrive advanced capabilities in Cost Management policies.

Microsoft splits the capabilities into two parts: Everyday productivity and Advanced capabilities.

Everyday productivity with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license

The updated guide explains what users can expect with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, called everyday productivity.

  • Ask questions, find content, and catch up
  • Create HTML, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files
  • Create simple rules, approvals, and deterministic workflows
  • Rename and share individual files
  • Create and manage skills
  • Use Autofill metadata processing
  • Create and edit pages, libraries, or lists (SharePoint only)

Examples:
Copilot-licensed users asking whether a contract has a termination clause, creating an HTML report from an Excel file, updating the status of a list item, or setting up an alert for changes in a library. Such tasks are classified as light tasks; see the picture below.

Advanced capabilities with usage-based billing

Larger and more demanding tasks are handled with Advanced capabilities.
Advanced capabilities are available with the Microsoft 365 Copilot license plus Copilot Credits and depend on Copilot Credits being made available to the user (via Cost Management policies in the Microsoft 365 admin center).

  • Work across large or unbounded content sets, including large-scale synthesis and document review
  • Create and edit files
  • Build multi-step, complex AI workflows, such as involving skills in scheduled AI automations
  • Use real-time Advanced Autofill (processing in near real time) and other continuous AI-driven metadata processing
  • Generate new images directly into document libraries and pages and edit existing pages
  • Get analytics on site and content performance across sites, pages, news and documents (SharePoint only)
  • Create entire sites and solutions (SharePoint only)
  • Create and edit pages, libraries, and lists at scale (SharePoint only)

Examples:
Working across a defined set of content, such as summarizing 250 deal rooms, counts as medium, while ongoing work across very large content collections counts as heavy; see the picture below.

Copilot in SharePoint informs eligible users when credits are required and changes the prompt box color for all following prompts.

Copilot in SharePoint informs users when credits are required

I asked Copilot to explain the coloring.

If the box turned immediately after you confirmed using credits, it likely indicates that a credit-using mode is active. I can’t confirm the exact meaning from color alone; check the mode or credit control near the prompt box and switch back to the non-credit option before sending another request.

Once enabled, users can’t leave the credit-based prompt box.

Sorry—I can’t switch the prompt mode from this chat. … Don’t submit another request until you’ve switched.

I don’t understand why Copilot doesn’t simply reply with a "refresh the page" message, because this resets the credit-based prompt box. 🤷‍♂️

Microsoft also added a picture describing that Copilot-licensed users can primarily run “Light tasks”; everything else requires the Copilot license plus Copilot Credits.

Users can add /cost to their prompt to see how many credits a task used, but only if they are in the credit-based prompt box. They can also check how many credits remain until their monthly limit resets.
