Spell check in the new Outlook and Outlook on the web can now run automatically before users send a message, so users no longer have to start it manually for each email.
Classic Outlook for Windows already had this capability for years. With this update, it is also available in new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web.
Timeline
The rollout should be completed by December 2026.
How does this affect your users?
Users of new Outlook and Outlook on the web can now configure Outlook to check spelling before every send. Previously, users had to start spell check manually for each message.
With this change, the check runs automatically when the user selects Send, which can reduce spelling mistakes in outgoing email.
If spelling corrections haven't been reviewed when a user selects Send, Outlook shows a Check spelling dialog. Users can select Check to review the corrections or Send anyway to send the message as it is.

Automatic spell check is disabled by default. The setting is configured by each user individually.
To enable it, users should open Outlook settings > Mail > Compose and enable “Always check spelling before sending”. This setting does not change the existing manual spell check behavior.

This setting requires Connected Experiences to be enabled (in the Outlook privacy settings, if not restricted by your organization). Users who have connected experiences disabled will not be able to use automatic spell checking before sending email.
