Outlook now lets users choose between total and unread counts for folders

Outlook users can now decide what number appears next to each folder in their folder pane.
Until now, Outlook showed only the number of unread items, which helps users keep up with new mail but doesn't show a folder's total item count. With this update, users can switch any folder to display the total item count instead.

To change the setting, users right-click a folder in the folder pane, select Change folder count, and then choose Show number of unread items or Show number of total items.

The Outlook folder context menu with Change folder count open and the options Show number of unread items and Show number of total items
Show the total count or the unread count per Outlook folder
  • The choice applies to that folder, so users can keep unread counts on their Inbox while showing totals on folders such as Archive or Projects.
  • Nothing else changes, so existing habits and folder layouts stay as they are.

This update should give users a little more control over how they keep track of their email, whether they want to spot new messages at a glance or get a quick sense of how much is stored in a folder.

The option is rolling out to users in Outlook on the web and the new Outlook.
